The Southern Utah University community and military community are mourning the loss of 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, a 25-year-old U.S. Army officer who was killed in action in Jordan while serving in support of military operations in the region.

Feehan was a graduate of Southern Utah University’s Army ROTC program and was pursuing an MBA at the university. According to SUU, he was only weeks away from completing the degree, which the university says will be awarded posthumously in recognition of his academic achievement.

The U.S. military identified Feehan as one of two soldiers killed during an attack at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. The Department of Defense said he was killed in action on July 18, 2026, and that the incident remains under investigation. Feehan was from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 55th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Southern Utah University President Mindy Benson expressed grief over the loss, describing Feehan as one of the university’s own and offering condolences to his family, fellow service members, classmates, and friends. The university has announced plans to honor his memory across campus in the coming weeks.

Feehan’s military service also prompted recognition from Hawaii officials. Gov. Josh Green ordered U.S. and Hawaii state flags to be flown at half-staff at state offices and agencies in his honor, calling his death a painful reminder of the human cost of war and expressing condolences to his family, friends, and fellow service members.

The Army has announced that Feehan will receive the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Action Badge, and that he will be posthumously promoted to captain. Military officials praised his dedication and leadership, saying his service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.
