A major law-enforcement response on Interstate 75 in Southwest Florida followed a shooting investigation that began in St. Petersburg and ended with the arrest of a suspect after a standoff on the interstate near Alico Road in Lee County.

According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the incident unfolded on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, after authorities began searching for a suspect wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a 47-year-old St. Petersburg city sanitation worker. Police described the shooting as a targeted, domestic-related incident.

The suspect reportedly fled the St. Petersburg area, prompting a statewide alert. FHP troopers later located the vehicle in Lee County and attempted to stop it. Authorities said the driver did not comply, leading to a pursuit that continued onto I-75.

The situation escalated near mile marker 126 and the Alico Road exit on southbound I-75. According to FHP, troopers ultimately stopped the vehicle using a precision immobilization maneuver, commonly known as a PIT maneuver. The suspect then barricaded himself inside the vehicle, leading to a significant police response involving FHP troopers and Lee County deputies.

Authorities established contact with the suspect before eventually taking him into custody. The suspect was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. No law-enforcement officers were reported injured during the incident.

The police activity caused major disruptions on I-75. Southbound lanes near Alico Road were closed while officers investigated the scene, and traffic was diverted as emergency crews worked to secure the area. The closure also created significant delays for motorists traveling through the Fort Myers area.

The incident attracted considerable attention from drivers and residents after a large number of law-enforcement vehicles were seen along the interstate. Social-media reports initially described the situation as a possible shooting on I-75, but authorities later clarified that the freeway incident involved the apprehension of a suspect connected to the earlier fatal shooting in St. Petersburg.

The St. Petersburg shooting victim was identified in local reports as a city sanitation technician and mother of four. Police said she was shot while inside her work vehicle at a location in the city. Investigators believe the victim and suspect knew each other, although authorities have not publicly released a motive.

The I-75 incident remains under investigation, with authorities examining the circumstances surrounding the pursuit, the traffic stop and the subsequent standoff. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is also investigating the use of force involved in the incident, according to local reports.

Motorists traveling through Southwest Florida are encouraged to check current traffic conditions before using I-75, particularly around the Alico Road area, as investigations and road restrictions can cause continued delays.
